Many of the North Sea platforms have passed through ownership numerous times with each transaction holding a risk of relevant documentation going missing. When we come to planning the decommissioning of these assets there can be holes in the documentation which should be considered. Examples include the use of various paints over the years, asbestos surveys and management plans being up to date, and items being removed over the years yet not recorded in the various weight reports etc. Whilst developing materials inventories for platforms we have experienced there being no available asbestos survey for a platform and on another platform reluctance to think about mercury when we subsequently found high levels of mercury in the export valve.
Lesson Learned: Look for it even if you don’t think you’ve got it…this includes mercury, NORM, and paint with hazardous substances as these are present more often than not.
