Receiving a phone call from a stressed Operator late on a Friday afternoon explaining that a section of topside can’t be offloaded to a waste management contractor’s quayside since it might contain hazardous waste is not a good way to start the weekend. It transpired that the Operator was using their incumbent waste contractor to receive the section and no-one had thought to check whether the waste contractor’s permit allowed for potential hazardous waste. In the end we were able to deduce that the waste in question was not hazardous. This situation arose because the materials inventory had not included offshore sampling to verify potential hazardous wastes.
Lesson Learned: Ensure the disposal yard can receive all the materials and wastes identified as regards capability and capacity as well as the requisite licences and permits
